This standard 21/30399831 DC BS ISO 12312-3. Eye and face protection. Sunglasses and related eyewear is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 13.340.20 Head protective equipment

This part of ISO 12312 is applicable to all nominally afocal (plano power) sunglasses for running, cycling and similar active lifestyles for protection against solar radiation.

The document specifies additional material, design, performance and marking requirements. The other applicable requirements are given in ISO 12312-1.

This type of sunglass is designed to not increase secondary hazards to the wearer in an accident rather than to provide high amounts of impact protection which are impossible in a spectacle format.

This part of ISO 12312 is not applicable to products intended for:

  1. protection against radiation from artificial light sources, such as those used in solaria;

  2. downhill skiing and snow-boarding, surface swimming, squash and racquetball;

  3. sports that include the use of a stick, bat, racquet or other implement;

  4. medically prescribed purposes for attenuation of solar radiation;

  5. direct observation of the sun, such as for viewing a partial or annular solar eclipse;

  6. occupational eye protection;

  7. protection of parts of the head and face other than the eyes.
