This standard BS 2588-1:1992 Portable sanitary pans for use in healthcare establishments. is classified in these ICS categories:

This Part of this British Standard specifies materials, construction and performance requirements for reusable bed pans intended for use by adults (type 1) and small children (type 2). A third type, type 3 pans, are intended for use with supine patients. Grade A pans are designed to withstand heat sterilization at 134 °C; grade B pans are capable of withstanding heat disinfection at 100 °C.

The pans specified in this standard are suitable for use on most types of mattress and bed, and are intended to fit into bed pan washer-disinfectors complying with BS 27452).

NOTE 1 Appendix A gives details of the information to be supplied by the purchaser to the manufacturer.
