This British Standard specifies sizes and styles of envelope for commercial, official and professional use. It includes sizes suitable for use with the forms and letterheads specified in BS 1808 and sizes selected from ISO 269. Advice about the storage of envelopes is given in Appendix A.

This British Standard does not apply to envelopes for special purposes such as for use with inserting machines, which may require sizes slightly larger than those specified. Requirements for storage envelopes for processed X-ray films are specified in BS 3043.
