DESCRIPTION

BS 949-5:1990

This standard BS 949-5:1990 Screwing taps is classified in these ICS categories:
  • 25.100.50 Taps and threading dies
  • 01.040.25 Manufacturing engineering (Vocabularies)

This International Standard on taps for ISO thread making shows the main types of taps and their dimensional characteristics. It also gives equivalent terms in the three official languages of ISO.

The purpose of this International Standard is to serve as a reference for tap users and manufacturers. The diagrams given, however, are only to illustrate the terminology as tap design can vary according to the manufacturer.

This International Standard includes

  • nomenclature of the main types of taps (clause 3);
  • styles of threaded portion of taps (clause 4);
  • sets of taps (clause 5);
  • dimensional characteristics of taps (clause 6);
  • thread profile of taps (clause 7).

In addition, numbered symbols are given opposite certain terms to identify the dimensional characteristics.

NOTE – In addition to terms used in the three official ISO languages (English, French and Russian), this International Standard gives the equivalent terms in German and Italian, these have been included at the request of ISO Technical Committee TC 29 and are published under the responsibility of the Member Bodies for Germany, F.R. (DIN) and Italy (UNI). However, only the terms given in the official languages can be considered as ISO terms.

Covers main types of taps and gives dimensional characteristics and numbered symbols given to identify dimensional characteristics.
